Cultivating patience: nurturing waiting skills in children

February 7,2026

Children often display stubbornness as a way to secure a desired toy, gift, or to avoid tasks they find unappealing, such as homework. While it is perfectly acceptable to provide children with what they want, it is crucial to do so only when they ask properly or demonstrate the ability to wait. For children who struggle with this, teaching them to count to ten or twenty before receiving a reward can be an effective way to build their waiting skills. This approach helps children learn how to make appropriate requests and manage their expectations for the future.

It is equally important to help children understand that certain responsibilities, like homework or social obligations, cannot be avoided. Access to rewarding activities, such as watching television, should only be granted after they have properly completed their necessary tasks. Instead of resorting to punishment for negative behaviors like tantrums or anger, parents should focus on reinforcing and rewarding positive, socially appropriate actions. By understanding a child's needs and fulfilling them only when they have listened and waited patiently, we can help them develop the emotional maturity required for lifelong success.
