Best Autism Treatment in India

Autism is not a disease, it’s a condition and they need help for mainstreaming and inclusion in the society’. There was a time when people used to follow psychiatric model of rehabilitation. It was Jewel Autism Centre that introduced the first paediatric occupational therapy department in Kerala and also first complete child development centre in Kerala with all associated departments such as Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Special Education, Child Psychology, Social work, ABA, Group therapy and Physiotherapy. It has now grown to be one of the best campuses in India.

An intervention program is a set of program elements or strategies designed to produce behaviour changes or improve health status among individuals in need. The intervention in Jewel incorporates programs like sensory integration, handwriting, coordination training, visual perception, visual-motor skills, and daily living skills. The treatment starts with detailed initial assessments, and the treatment being provided is made according to each individual. The centre uses a specially designed standardized assessment tool called Jewel’s protocol to assess the children and also internationally approved standardized assessment tools like sensory processing measures, short sensory profile, modified checklist (M chat), the Wantable scale for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), sensory integration, and praxis test. The sensory integration sessions are play-oriented, include equipment such as swings, trampolines, and slides. Jewel also uses therapies based on deep pressure, brushing, weighted vest, and swinging.

The department of Speech Language Pathology caters to various speech, articulation, language and communication disorders. Every child that is brought to Jewel is given an initial assessment from which a baseline and a diagnosis is arrived at. Standardized tests and materials such as REELS, ALD, 3D-LAT, SLDC, CARS, M-CHAT, etc. are used for the diagnostic procedure. Then a therapy plan is formulated individually for every child based on the above assessment and with the JEWEL’s developmental level chart devised from standardized checklists. Every structured session is for 45 minutes, which makes use of therapy materials specifically picked to cater for the various speech, language and communication disorders. Some of which includes sensory stimulation files, puzzles, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), interactive story cards/books, flash cards, individualized materials, etc. These in combination with strategies and techniques specially for Autism and other Speech, language and communication disorders helps facilitate the communication development.

The Individualized Education program of Jewel Autism and Child Development Centre handle various type of disorders such as autism, Intellectual disability, Learning Disability and GDD Population. The aim here is to teach children and help them attain their normal cognitive development skills for formal schooling. During assessment, an evaluation of pre-requisite learning skills such as eye contact, attention, sitting tolerance, pre reading, pre-writing skills, writing skills and arithmetic skills are done. After assessment, parents are educated on the importance of IEP sessions and main problems faced by their child. After starting therapy sessions, once the child has achieved their age-appropriate development and parents are satisfied with it, they are then enrolled in a group teaching setting.
