Introduction
The practice of ragging in institutions has changed a lot over the years. What started as a way to welcome new students and build a community on campus has become a way to scare and hurt people.
The Good Old Days
A time ago ragging was meant to be a good thing. It was supposed to help new students get used to college life by making them:
- Stand up and perform in front of people like singing or dancing.
- Talk to groups about things that happened in their lives.
- Get over being shy and afraid of speaking in front of people.
- Build relationships between older and younger students.
The Bad Change
Nowadays ragging is often about being mean and hurting people on purpose. This is because many young people do not care about how others feel and they are also influenced by things outside of school:
- The media shows people being aggressive and mean and young people think this is cool.
- More and more people are using drugs, which makes them behave in ways.
- Many people think that because they went through ragging their younger friends should suffer too.
